We celebrated Jake's 5th birthday today. It felt a little strange celebrating it today, since at home his birthday would have been a day later. For his special celebration, he decided to see the movie Megamind and then go to a "fancy" dinner at the outdoor McDonald's Cafe. At home, this would have been a very simple request to fill. Here, it meant finding out where the theater was located, taking the MRT to the correct stop, and then finding the theater from the MRT station. This is not easy to do when most people here only understand minimal English and can't really help you with directions. Upon leaving the first MRT station, we were told that the theater we wanted was closed for renovations and that we should get back on the MRT and go to another theater. The next problem we encountered was that Jeff was supposed to meet us at the theater that was closed. Since I do not have a cell phone yet, we had to find a shop in the mall that would let us use their phone. We managed to do this and were able to contact Jeff, who got on his computer at work, and told us where to take the MRT so we could see the movie at another theater. Did I mention that upon exiting an MRT stop, you usually end up in a very confusing mall (with 5 or 6 levels) that is difficult to find your way out of? Additionally, you often have to cross the street underground and we are still trying to figure out how to get to the correct corner on the first attempt. Nonetheless, we eventually found the theater, met Jeff, saw the movie (which was hilarious) and had our dinner at McDonald's. I am not sure why people keep telling us that Singapore is so easy to get around. Jeff said that if we just memorize the names of the malls (there are one after another) we should be okay.
I had to post these pictures of Jake in his new costumes that he got for his birthday. Thanks to Gammy for making these great capes (King and magician). He loves them!
Happy, happy birthday Jake!!!! It feels so strange not being able to see Jake for his birthday. I love him all dressed up in his capes. Sounds like quite an adventure to see a movie but also sounds really fun! We miss you guys so much.
